I have an average job working in a management position of a company. I went from working in full time ministry to moving back in state and taking on a regular job. Everyday I wake up and despise going to work. Not because of the people, or the job itself but simply because I am not happy doing what I am doing. My heart has always been to help people and to “do God’s work.” How can I do that behind a desk starring at a computer desk all day? I felt unfulfilled and like I wasn’t where God wanted me.
Boy was I wrong…
God had to correct me in my thinking because He turns all things around for the good and He leads us and guides us as we allow Him. We do NOT have to be in full time ministry to be doing God’s work. Everything we do should glorify God, whether we are in ministry or not.
I am reading a book called The Practice of the Presence of God and this book laid it out so plainly that “The time of work is not different for me than the time of prayer.” Meaning, we must practice being in the presence of God always. He is ALWAYS with us and time we spend outside of prayer is just as important as the time we spend in prayer.
“Whatever you do [whatever your task may be], work from the soul [that is, put in your very best effort], as [something done] for the Lord and not for men,”
Colossians 3:23 AMP
We have to work as unto the lord . Work as if we are doing it for God. We must apply our minds to the outward works just as we apply our minds to inward prayers.
Spending time with God in prayer is important but we must make a lifestyle out of it. We must ensure that all that we do glorifies God. The world needs us whether we are nail techs or missionaries. When we are children of God, we are salt to this earth, do not let the religious church make you believe that if you are not in ministry, you are not doing God’s work. Jesus hung out with tax collectors, fishermen, fathers, and teachers.
Just make sure that wherever you are , whatever you are doing, you are a light and you are glorifying God. Make sure that when people encounter you, they encounter your holy God. If you are working a normal job just like me, there shouldn’t be a reason why your co-workers do not know you are Christian. People should be able to tell you are Christian from your actions alone, not just your words.
“By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you have love and unselfish concern for one another.”
John 13:35 AMP
I encourage you to read Colossians 3 and remember that you have to allow God to lead you and if He led you to an accounting job or a fast food restaurant , that is where you are needed.
I have since corrected my thinking of not liking where I am , and feeling like I wasn’t doing God’s work. If I am simply speaking about His love and living out His word than I am doing God’s work, and so are you .
